Relieving Aching, Sore Shoulders: Understanding Subacromial Impingement Syndrome
Do you have achey, sore shoulders? If so, you are not alone.
Inflammation and pain in the soft tissues of the shoulder is a common and problematic issue. When this happens in the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder but important muscles!), as they travel through an area known as the subacromial space, it is referred to as “subacromial impingement syndrome” (SIS). The problem arises when the shoulder muscles repeatedly get pinched by the surrounding structures during specific movements, which then stops the correct muscles from working and causes incorrect and poor movement leading to more pain.

Symptoms of SIS can include pain on certain movements of your arm (primarily moving it above your head and/or moving it behind your head or your back) and you might notice a lack of strength in that arm too. You may experience discomfort when lying in bed at night and if you lie on theaffected shoulder. The pain may reach from your shoulder to your elbow. The issue can be a bit of a “catch 22” situation where the pinching causes inflammation, and the inflammation causes swelling, which increases the pinching.
How can we treat shoulder pain caused by SIS? Well, there are a few things we can do and the best combination of therapies will depend on your individual issue (we’ll do a thorough assessment first) and what caused it, but therapies will normally include Osteopathic treatment, exercises, and activity modifications.
At Remedy Health Clinic we also offer laser therapy which is a painless and non-invasive treatment, to reduce swelling, inflammation and pain, plus speed up your bodies own natural healing process.
In summary if you have SIS, or other shoulder issues, laser could help to quickly reduce your pain and inflammation to get you moving (and sleeping!) more easily.
At Remedy Health Clinic we offer a full assessment, diagnosis and treatment package including Osteopathy & Laser – contact us or book online for more information!
