It is natural in most circumstances to worry about your symptoms and the cause, but you can be confident that your chiropractor is highly trained to screen for and to rule out more serious diagnoses. They will advise you and discuss with you any further action that might be required. Normally your treatment will begin at your first appointment, but sometimes they may require further tests first i.e. blood tests or scans. Occasionally they may diagnose something that they are unable to treat and may refer you to your GP or another appropriate health professional.
In order to make a diagnosis your chiropractor will need to examine the area(s) of your body causing discomfort. To do this effectively it is likely that we will ask you to remove some outer clothing, so we can assess the areas of the body causing concern, this will also make treatment easier and more effective. If you are uncomfortable undressing to your underwear, you can bring or wear clothing such as shorts, a vest top, or close fitting garments, that will enable us to work effectively without making you feel uncomfortable.
Sometimes the cause of the problem may be in a different area to the pain, for example, pain in your lower arm may be linked to the nerves in your neck, so they may need to examine your whole body. To do this they will need to feel for any tightness in the muscles, joints and other tissues, but they will explain what they are doing during the session.
Our chiropractic service offers a treatment plan included within the initial consultation.
Once we have made a diagnosis, we will discuss this with you, what we can do to help i.e. what treatment we can provide, and what you can do as well.
This may involve further visits for manual therapy – a range of gentle hands-on techniques that focus on releasing tension, stretching muscles and improving mobility.
Together with exercises that you can do at home and helpful advice designed to help you relieve or manage your pain, keep active and maintain the best of health.
Our chiropractor focuses on the individual patient, so the treatment you receive will be specific to you and your problem. Chiropractors use a wide range of gentle hands-on techniques to release tension, stretch muscles, and mobilize joints. These are often used together with exercise and helpful advice designed to help you relieve or manage your pain, keep active and maintain the best of health.
Following treatment you may experience some mild soreness in the area of their body that was treated, this will normally go away within 48-hours. If you experience serious or unusual symptoms after treatment you should contact your chiropractor straight away for advice.
At your first visit, we’ll ask about you in detail and about why you’ve made an appointment, which helps us to work out what might be causing your pain or discomfort. We will also take a full medical history. You may want to bring scans/x-rays, consultants letters, prescriptions with you to help you recall information accurately.
Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.
Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and if your chiropractor feels your problem is not suitable for chiropractic care or needs further investigation, they will liaise with your GP and other health care providers to arrange an appropriate referral, as long as you provide your permission to do so.
The McTimoney approach to chiropractic was developed by the late John McTimoney over 50 years ago and is taught only at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Abingdon, near Oxford. It is well known for being a precise, whole body approach to chiropractic care.
The gentle nature of chiropractic the McTimoney way makes it suitable for people throughout their lifetime from babyhood to those in later life.
Many graduates of the McTimoney College go on to develop special interests and attend further postgraduate training, so by using the search facility on this site, you can find a chiropractor near you who focuses on pregnancy, paediatric, sports or later life chiropractic care.

Chiropractors focus on the spine and the neuro-musculoskeletal system and how conditions affecting these areas can affect your health and performance. Chiropractors are trained to assess the neuro-musculoskeletal system and identify restrictions, imbalances and dysfunction. Our package of care involves spinal and peripheral joint adjustments and mobilisations, application of soft tissue treatment and advice on exercise, self-help, diet and lifestyle where appropriate. Some chiropractors offer rehabilitation programmes. Chiropractors do not use medicines or surgery and the gentle manual approaches we use are extremely safe and comfortable to receive.
A package of chiropractic care may be used regularly to help maintain good posture, promote health and improve performance, no matter what it is you do, from a high performance athlete to a senior member of the community enjoying a potter in the garden. Patients undergoing chiropractic care often report benefits from:

We often use laser therapy alongside hands-on chiropractic treatment to help reduce pain and inflammation and support recovery, particularly for longer-standing or tendon-related issues. Your treatment plan will always be guided by what is most suitable for you.
