Debunking the Myths Surrounding Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic treatment is a well-established approach to supporting the musculoskeletal system and helping people recover from all kinds of injuries. Yet the moment I mention that I’m a chiropractor, the questions start flying. I’ve heard everything from “So you’re the ones who click backs?” to “Isn’t that all a bit heebie-jeebie?”

So today, I’m setting the record straight and clearing up some of the common myths about what we do.

“You just click bones.”

Let’s start with the classic. Yes, sometimes during an adjustment you may hear an audible sound — what we call cavitation. But despite the drama of the noise, it’s not the star of the show.

As practitioners, we’re more interested in how the adjustment affects your body, movement, and alignment. Some patients cavitate loudly, some barely at all, and some not at all. The effectiveness of the treatment isn’t measured by volume. Your body’s response is what matters.

“Chiropractic is only for back pain.”

A big myth — and one that seriously undersells what we do.

Chiropractors, myself included, treat the body as an interconnected whole. Shoulders, knees, feet — they’re all fair game. Treatment extends beyond individual joints. Muscles, the nervous system, and even psychological stress can influence how the body functions.

Treating someone holistically often leads to better outcomes and a smoother road to recovery.

“You’ll be stuck going forever.”

I wish I could say one treatment fixes everything — imagine the reviews — but that’s not how the body works. We need to see how your system responds, and that varies from person to person.

Regular maintenance can help your body stay balanced, and when the occasional niggle pops up, it often takes fewer sessions to sort out.

However, if a chiropractor insists on weekly appointments for the next ten weeks and asks you to pay upfront, that’s a red flag. Your needs can change from one session to the next, and ethical, patient-focused care respects that.

“It’s painful and dangerous.”

Chiropractors are regulated, licensed professionals who undergo rigorous training. Safety is at the heart of everything we do.

Adjustments should never be painful — discomfort can slow progress — and we use a wide range of techniques to ensure treatment is effective, gentle, and tailored to your preferences.

Chiropractic care is far more than the clichés it’s often reduced to. We’re not here to “click backs,” trap you in lifelong treatment plans, or perform anything remotely heebie-jeebie. We’re trained, regulated professionals who take a whole-body, whole-person approach to helping people move, function, and feel better.

If more people understood what chiropractic truly involves, they’d realise it’s not mysterious at all — just a thoughtful, hands-on way of supporting the body’s natural ability to heal. And if this little myth-busting session helps even one person see chiropractic in a clearer light, then that’s a win in my book.
